Although Trinity Landing isn’t under construction yet, Nate Futrell is already in on the ground floor. As Trinity Landing’s future Director of Health and Wellness Services, and with nearly a decade of industry experience of empowering seniors through fitness, Nate is in charge of our community’s fitness and wellness initiatives.
“One of my favorite parts of my role here is being able to help design our wellness spaces, choose our fitness equipment and craft the programming schedules to make this a top-notch wellness environment from day one,” Nate said. “I’ve already met with many prospective residents to learn what resources they want and expect.”
Finding his passion
During his time at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Nate originally intended to pursue sports medicine for athletes. However, his internship at Wilmington Hospital’s cardiac rehab wing sparked his passion for helping seniors. From there, Nate embarked on his career in the senior living industry by helping to develop communities’ wellness centers in the region, as well as serving as wellness director and consultant for several communities.
A golden opportunity
While living and working in the Wilmington area, Nate knows the reputation of Trinity Landing’s parent organization, Lutheran Services Carolinas. When he learned about Trinity Landing, he saw it as a “golden opportunity.”
“I’ve had my eye on working here since 2016,” Nate shared. “The chance to be with this community, and with Lutheran Services Carolinas, from the start was really appealing to me. Being able to help with our marketing efforts, meeting prospective residents and forming our ‘community without walls’ are all things I’m super excited about.”
A big team, with big plans
One of the aspects of life at Trinity Landing that Nate is most excited about is that the community will have a full team of wellness coordinators and fitness instructors. The team will hold degrees in Exercise Science and will all be nationally certified. Together, they’ll guide fitness classes and also provide one-on-one wellness support such as fitness testing, wellness assessments, program consultation and more.
With a team of wellness coordinators, fitness instructors and a full-time personal trainer on staff, Trinity Landing will also offer robust wellness programming, with seven to eight programs per day, five days per week. Here’s a sampling of the programs that the community will plan to offer:
- Three levels of aquatic programming
- Two levels of cardio and strength conditioning
- Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
- Tai chi
- TRX training
- Pickleball on dedicated outdoor courts
- Golf outings at local courses
- Balance training
- Kayaking trips
- Biking clubs
- Walking clubs
- Line dancing
The programming won’t be the only factor that will help create an environment of total wellness at Trinity Landing. The wellness center itself, which Nate is helping to design, will be quite the space.
“Our spacious wellness center will have an outdoor-concept feel to it, with a huge array of windows looking out to its own wellness courtyard that will have fire and water design features,” Nate explained. “The center will have an abundance of strength training and cardiovascular equipment, all featuring the latest technology and a stunning 60-foot by 30-foot saltwater pool built for large groups for water aerobics and lap swimming.”
Setting Trinity Landing apart
“Anyone can build a beautiful building and have great equipment. What makes Trinity Landing great is the people you’ll interact with every day, both our staff and fellow residents,” Nate said.
The fact that Trinity Landing and Lutheran Services Carolinas are nonprofit, faith-based organizations will create an environment that’s driven by the organizations’ mission, not shareholders’ interests. Having employees like Nate, whose passion for their career shows in all they do, enforces our mission, “Empowered by Christ, we walk together with all we serve,” and will always make Trinity Landing a special place.
When asked what else will make Trinity Landing special both for fitness opportunities and otherwise, Nate went for the biggest factor of all – “we’re right on the water!”
