Rich History & Many Museums

First incorporated in 1739, this more than 275-year-old port city has a robust list of historic locations to explore, dating from pre-Revolutionary War, to the Civil War and World War II.

If you love historic homes, you can start by visiting the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens, which dates to 1770, where you’ll step back in time to the 1700s as you tour the house and colonial-style gardens.

For an antebellum experience, explore the Bellamy Mansion, “one of North Carolina’s most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture.” The Bellamy Mansion serves as a museum of history and the design arts, and tells the stories not only of the Bellamy family but also of the free and enslaved black artisans who built the home and the enslaved workers who lived on the property.

The Latimer House depicts life during the Victorian Era and features fourteen rooms filled with more than 600 objects from the period. Here, you’ll learn about three generations of the Latimer family – starting in the mid 1800s and ending when the building was purchased by the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society in 1963.

For World War II history buffs, the Battleship North Carolina is docked in Wilmington. This important ship participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific. During WWII, Battleship North Carolina housed 144 commissioned officers and 2,195 enlisted men. Tours of the ship will provide education on the ship’s history and a look at life for the men who served on her.

Wilmington also features a variety of museums – from the Cameron Art Museum–which features a variety of art installations ranging from contemporary to local, and photography to sculpture–to the Wilmington Railroad Museum, a great place to bring young family members to learn all about the exciting world of trains. The Cape Fear Museum focuses on the Cape Fear area’s history, science and cultures, and the North Carolina Military History Museum boasts artifacts and military equipment to educate the public on military events from the Colonial period through to the present.

Nature’s Beauty

Wilmington’s location on the water provides abundant opportunities to bask in nature’s beauty. Consider visiting Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, where surf fishing, birding and photography are popular pastimes. Perhaps you’d rather spend your time relaxing on a river boat tour of Cape Fear River. Or, rent kayaks or jet skis to explore the river. If you enjoy scuba diving or snorkeling, there are ample opportunities, or you could charter a fishing boat for a deep-sea fishing adventure.

Wilmington also offers a variety of parks, some of which are pet friendly and others that offer water access and fishing opportunities! And last, but most certainly not least are the beautiful beaches of Wilmington – Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beaches are just moments away!

Downtown Dining & Shopping

Wilmington’s award-winning Riverwalk features 1.75 miles of boardwalk along the Cape Fear River. The Riverwalk provides access to a variety of parks, shopping, dining and museums – all without getting in and out of your car. You’ll often find public art installations along the way, and more than one friendly face! If you’d prefer, you can hop on the free Downtown Trolley and take a driving tour of downtown Wilmington.
