Accountants are known to be highly organized, innovative and detail oriented. With traits like these, it’s little wonder that Burnie Marvin seeks the security, active programming, and maintenance-free living of a Continuing Care Retirement Community (or CCRC).
In 1969, Burnie and his wife Diane moved from Ohio to Washington, D.C., to escape the cold and snow. Burnie pursued a career in accounting for a federal government contractor, and Diane secured a job in the federal government. For 30 years they enjoyed the cosmopolitan life that the District of Columbia had to offer. “We loved working in D.C. where we could meet people from different states and countries,” Burnie shared.
Winding up in Wilmington
However, as the years went by, Burnie and Diane realized that D.C. also received its fair share of snow, so they moved farther south. They pinpointed Wilmington, North Carolina, as the perfect location for their next step due to its temperate climate and lively cultural arts scene. In 2000, they relocated and selected a home just outside of Wilmington.
Here in North Carolina, Burnie worked as a chief financial officer for a healthcare organization. But after some health changes, Burnie stopped working at age 64. Sadly, Diane passed away in 2015 and it was at that point Burnie considered a move to a CCRC. “My biggest concern about living by myself was if something would happen to me,” Burnie explained. “I have a dog, but she can’t call 911.”
First in line for endless opportunities
A planner by nature, Burnie liked the idea of a continuum of healthcare should he ever need it. “You can’t put a price tag on comfort, peace of mind, and how well you’re treated,” Burnie shared. His son, who now lives in Florida, embraced this idea, too.
After attending several events at the future site of the community, Burnie made a 10% reservation deposit at Trinity Landing, which is slated to open in 2022. He chose Trinity Landing because of its nearness to the water and Wilmington. He also discovered several friends from his church had interest in the area’s newest independent living option for active older adults.
As a Founder’s Club member, Burnie got a priority spot in line to secure his home at Trinity Landing, and he chose his favorite one-bedroom apartment home that’ll offer easy access to resort-style amenities like the recreational pavilion, library, indoor pool, and both fine and casual restaurants on-site. And with an adorable Maltese Shih Tzu named Abby to care for, Burnie also looks forward to the walking trails, nearby park, and dog run.
The future looks bright
Staying busy in Wilmington, Burnie recently helped install accounting software for his church and he also chairs the finance committee there. When not playing the role of accountant, he loves sports (especially soccer) and enjoys theater. He’s sure to find many like-minded new neighbors when Trinity Landing opens!
Eyeing his future at Trinity Landing, Burnie sees himself using all of the amenities, too. “Nate [Wellness Director] is planning a bunch of activities, like paddle boarding to an island on the other side of the sound,” said Burnie. He also looks forward to trips to the theater, sporting events, and other group outings.
“I like the concept of a Continuing Care Retirement Community,” said Burnie. “It has everything to keep you acting young but has the care if you need it.”
